Ethical Business Dilemmas. Volume 8 in the UBSS Publications series.

The title itself highlights two main concepts that are of utmost importance in today’s Business Environment – Ethics and Business Behaviour.

By definition Ethical Behaviour refers to the moral principles, rules and attitudes that organisations demonstrate in their conduct and operational dealings. Ethical Behaviour in Business is necessary for maintaining employee safety, adherence to law and regulation and protection of the environment.

The perception of Sound Ethical Behaviour can increase employee performance, job satisfaction, organisational commitment and trust.

Ethical Business Behaviour enhances the law by outlining acceptable behaviour beyond government control and promotes integrity among employees and key stakeholders.

Understanding Ethics in Business is indeed a complicated confusing “Dilemma”.

Description

Ethical Business Dilemmas. Volume 8 in the UBSS Publications series. This book discusses the lived experience of academics and managers.

Focus of the book
As humans we take note of how people that we respect conduct their working life and we are influenced by them. That is why we were interested to obtain the experience of everyday professionals and businesspeople in the dealing of their dilemmas. We found that a focus on ethical behaviour did not necessarily inhibit success in the cutthroat world of business. Often good ethical behaviour leads to long term
personal and organisational sustainable success.

“Being the richest man in the cemetery does not matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we have done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me.”

Steve Jobs (1955-2011),
the co-founder, chairman and CEO
of Apple.

Most professional and trade organisations have recognised the importance of ethical behaviour in their training. Business ethics has become an emerging field since the 1970s and will continue to become an important area for business in the future.

Notes for the facilitator
If the book is used in an educational setting or business course training, the facilitator may wish to discuss how the contributors’ experiences relate to business ethics theory. The authors hope that by the end of the book the reader should be convinced that business ethics is a real thing.
