Description
Polepole is a beautifully illustrated children’s picture book that explores the importance of family and taking time to enjoy life.
The golden rays break across the African savannah, pushing the shadows of the night aside. A herd of elephants lumber across the cracked ground and suddenly the barren land is teeming with life. In the distance peeking out from a blanket of gossamer clouds is the summit of the sleeping giant, Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing guard over his domain.
If you zoom in on that majestic mountain and look carefully, you might just be able to see a minuscule ant-like figure zigzagging at a miraculous speed.
Up and up, higher and higher.
He was young with scraggly long hair and an unkempt beard. His fluorescent coat acting as a beacon for all those below to follow.
With a quiet power he climbed the steep gradient of the mountain, not noticing the explosion of colours around him. Vivid pinks and startling violets gave way to the golden light of the day.
“Polepole!” called his sherpa, but the young man continued without blinking an eye.

Beautifully written and illustrated. We loved the different ways the story captured the essence of love and grief – a rare find in a children’s text! Thank you for sharing your story Rachel Watkins. A powerful tool in helping children connect with their emotions, empathy and loss.
