Description
Scholarship and Higher Education in a Post-COVID World. Volume 13 in the UBSS Publications series. A valuable online strategy handbook for educational institutions, faculty and students.
The first half of 2023 has been marked by continued transformation – from COVID-19 lockdowns and other restraints to freedom to travel anywhere, from an energy system based primarily on fossil fuels to one based on more clean but less reliable and more expensive intermittent sources, and in many industries from wholly online interactions to working face-to-face with suppliers, colleagues, and customers. For the higher education sector, the transition has been from on-campus learning to hybrid systems incorporating increasingly larger components of digitally-based activities and content.
However, considerable uncertainty remains about the kind of world we are moving into. Many of the changes that were adopted by necessity during the pandemic are now being viewed as improvements, and supporters are keen that they be retained in the new post-COVID environment. In education, these include the freedom provided by digital technologies for students to study anywhere and at any time and for staff to choose locations and times that enhance their own innovation and productivity and strengthen the triple bottom line of the institutions in which they work. However, permanent adoption of these changes faces considerable barriers, due to both inertia and strong and understandable opposition from players with significant stakes in pre-COVID systems.
This book contains observations and reflections of academics, managers, and administrators currently working in the higher education sector as they try to shape and adjust to the new situation. Special emphasis has been placed on learnings from the COVID experience – on what worked well and should be retained, and what presented too many problems and should be discarded. It also contains chapters on changes in the business and household environments and how teaching and learning materials can be modified to incorporate them. It is, however, still very much a works-in-progress. Future editions in the series will track the ongoing insights of CSR scholars as they continue to work towards their goal of providing a relevant, interesting, and effective working environment for their students.
