Danny Phiri

Danny Phiri is the author of “What is Hotter Than the Fire?” A book born from his passion for using proverbs to spread cultural wisdom.

Danny Phiri was born in the Eastern part of Zambia. He is the fifth born in a family of nine siblings. He is married to Gertrude Phiri and has three children, two girls and one boy.

His passion to work with children started while he was still in High School. He was the Sunday School Teacher at his local Church. It was the interest in working with young ones that motivated him to become a teacher. He got his first Degree as a Science Teacher later studied for an Honors Degree in Community Development. He also attained a Social Work Degree while working with the then Department for Child Protection and Family Support in Southwest Region as the Group Home Manager and Team Leader. This role brought him into close interaction with vulnerable children in the Out Home Care.

It was his engagement with disadvantaged communities that qualified him for the inaugural Ciara Glennon Scholarship in 2002. Through the Scholarship, Danny received a master’s degree in Leadership from the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA). While her death was and remains tragic, Ciara’s life has sprouted through many others that have received assistance through the scholarship, and are now serving in various sectors including Health, Defence, Education, Transport and Local Government: May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Perfect Peace.

Danny is one of the elders in the Zambian community in Australia. He has participated in numerous community activities over the past number of years. This led to being awarded a Community Service recognition award by the organisation of Zambians Living in Western Australia in 2017.

Danny is also a founding member of the African Professionals of Australia (APA), an organisation whose aim is to support professionals of African origin, empowering them to reach their full potential in their chosen field.

Danny’s storytelling skills have been his strength, especially in engaging with various community members. It was his oratory skills that propelled him into becoming the Community Mobilization Specialist with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Zambia in 2004. He continues to use his oratory skills whenever an opportunity arises, both in his family and the community. It is only when you have come face to face with him that you recognize his unique ability to engage with people of all ages.
