Mischievous Birdie Coco is a children’s picture book. Discover how Coco, the mischievous cockatoo makes friends with his neighbours.

Birdie Coco is a lively young bird. He loves the lake and is a marvellous synchronised diver. Coco is full of energy and playfulness. However, he has been up to some mischief, especially at the house of his neighbour, old Mr Papadopoulos. Coco’s playful prank is becoming bothersome for the elderly man. Mr Papadopoulos issues a dire warning. Can Coco get himself out of this trouble and also make a new friend to attend his diving sessions.

Mischievous Birdie Coco is the second book by the talented Brintha Vaikindan and illustrated by the equally talented Vidya Lalgudi Jaishankar. The first book, Love In The Pandemic can be found here: https://booksonlineaustralia.com.au/shop/love-in-the-pandemic/

Coco, the central character is a sulphur-crested cockatoo.  These are large white parrots found predominantly in Australia and some neighbouring islands. These native birds are featured proudly on the Australian ten-dollar notes.

Sulphur-crested cockatoos have a distinctive yellow crest on their heads and a yellow wash on the underside of their wings. They prefer tall eucalyptus, often near water, for nesting and roosting in.

The birds have strong beaks and feed on seeds, nuts, roots, and insects. Frequently, you will see a flock of them busily biting off branches and leaves. This behaviour is not so much about feeding, but rather trimming and sharpening their beaks. This habit has earned them a bad reputation because they trim building materials and wires, or cause damage to farm crops.

A flock of snow-white birds with yellow crests is a spectacular sight in the distance. However, their distinctive screech is deafening. Their intelligence is comparable to that of a chimpanzee. They are loved for their cleverness and playfulness, hence the Australian slang ‘clever cocky’.

1 review for Mischievous Birdie Coco

  1. Meagan Allen

A bit of cute mischief, creating a charming read.

The author Brintha Vaikundan has again written an exceptional children’s book, that displays both a traditional and contemporary sensibility of Australiana with its characters Birdie Coco and Mr Papadopoulos. With more beautiful illustrations, readers will be taken on a journey that’s thoughtful, filled with chuckles and moral life lessons. Highly recommend!
