  1. Anne Bennett

A lovely story for young children, promoting much discussion. Bev’s simple story line and use of language is engaging for young readers and listeners alike. Children will want to know how the story ends and follow Daisy’s antics right to the conclusion. Jan’s colourful illustrations engage the reader and follow Daisy’s activities whilst she is waiting for Maureen’s return.

  2. Jim Cumming (verified owner)

Daisy is one curious, capricious cat.

Devoted to her owner Maureen, she has the run not only of a comfortable suburban apartment, but also the surrounding community garden where flowers, insects and birds abound.

Interestingly, Daisy has a secret admirer who is a keen observer of her various activities and escapades—particularly when Maureen is away from home.

As the title suggests, the admirer calls, whispers and even shouts at Daisy with a view to attracting her attention. However, all efforts to engage this intransigent moggie are to no avail.

Beverley Wilkes has constructed a delightful short story for young children who may well identify with this feisty feline, especially if they have a family pet at home.

Cleverly illustrated by Jan Briggs, Daisy appears on almost every page in a variety of poses that embellish the text.

One can visualise a parent, relative or babysitter reading this enchanting narrative while simultaneously drawing a child’s attention to intriguing fauna and flora depicted on each page.

Examples include geckos, fish, frogs, snails, ants, spiders, worms, dragonflies, ladybugs, birds, bees and butterflies.

A positive aspect of this children’s story is the potential for personal reflection and imagination. Depending on the age of children listening to this story, they could be encouraged to ponder: What is their favourite picture or page and why? Who is the secret admirer—neighbour, relative or friend? How would they encourage Daisy to come to them?

In summary, a charming story for bedtime, quiet time or anytime.

Great book and great drawings. We loved finding the little animals hidden in the pages. You should definitely read it.
